Beat Root Grand Championships 2009 @ The Loft (4.11.09)
Excited for this event! It’s been a minute since I’ve heard some beats. Beat Root winners Lael, The Hap, OSNA, TKO, DJAH & Kazu the Gonzo will be bringing that hot fiyah. Also, performances by NMB, Nabahe, Slapp Symphony, Rhyme Da Old Man, Bless’dChill, Creed Chameleon & New Jacks. Please come out and support at The Loft on April 11th. Starts at 9pm, ends at 130am. Presale tickets on-sale at Easy Music Center, In4mation, and www.eleshawaii.com. $5.50 on-line and $5 at the other spots. Or just purchase them at the door for $7.
Also, Lightsleepers with the help of Slapp Symphony helped compile a CD of beats from numerous producers of past Beat Roots. With every paid ticket the first 100 at the event will get the CD FREE. The Beatroot Sampler features Sentric, Lael, Joe Gosalvez, Slapp and many others as well. I am truly blessed to also be featured on this CD. Thanks Kav.
BR Sampler
Free is always good but with a collection of beats from past Beat Root producers, it’s sure to be a reason to come in early.
Here’s a little video of a friend of mines, JR Matsumura. An awesome man of God.
Music featured on the video by one of the local Hip-Hop artists, NoMasterBacks, also strong Christ followers.
This is JR’s God-given gift, a talent for surfing. A very unique talent.
Shaun, Micah, and I helped him put together another video using this footage. A video for Prolifik Clothing, so look out for that. This is just a lil’ sneak peek for you guys. Enjoy.
Praise God for the awesome, talented, men & women of God that He has put in my life! Thank you Lord.
You won’t really understand this post, but what the heck.
The other night, I was talking with my friends Shaun, Jameson, and Micah about music that was popular back in the day (during high school/intermediate days). And we mentioned this.
Shaun Castro: “That was whack”
Ha!
I still can’t believe this was super popular myself. *Shakes head in disgust*
What is he sayin’?! The beat is pretty cool, but what is he sayin’?!
I don’t understand because, of course, I ain’t from the South. But did anyone who wasn’t from the South understand this song?
Yes, tonight is the night of the last groundUP show of the year. I guess it’s starting right now since it’s 8pm.
I’ll be getting off of work @ 9pm, so I’ll be there after 9 of course.
Look out for Shaun Castro & Eukarezt @ the show. The got some dope stuff on sale.
Eukarezt will have limited edition t-shirts for sale, only 22 of them. $20 with a free print of one of his new paintings.
Shaun Castro has the “Looking Down on Giants” tee, designed by him and printed by Prolifik. Shirts will be $20, but if you would like to support above $20, he’ll definitely be glad to receive. Money will go towards his trip to Philippines to be trained as a campus missionary in October. He doesn’t have much time, so please support. Also, he will have artwork for sale at the show. This will probably be the last show he’ll be part of, so please come out and support.
Design Significance: David and Goliath, what a crazy story! David was a young shepherd, who was full of faith and spoke it out before he got into battle with Goliath. He fully trusted in God, knowing that He is the One fighting the battle. Please check out 1 Samuel 17 for more insight. David is depicted standing on the word “looKing” but when you look at it closely i capitalized the “k,” so David is actually standing on the “King (of kings).” Red was chosen to represent the blood of Christ… and he chose grey for the giant, because when we fight and struggle against the enemy, we usually do so in the grey areas of our lives.
Also, I will be selling beat CDs at the show for $5. Mostly new stuff with some old gems. Look out for me, and get a copy. I only got 20 of them that’s why!
Anyways, come out and support the artists and the homies. It will be fun.
Did I mention DJ Liger & DJ Memoir are gonna have a DJ Battle?! Haha.
Last week Thursday, August 21, 2008, the Lightsleeper Crew held the second edition of the Beat Root Qualifying series for this year @ Easy Music Center downtown (Corner of King Street & Keeaumoku Street). My friends Shaun Castro, Philippe Anthony and myself entered this beat battle along with Everybody Knows, Portuguese Sausage Fest, and newcomer The Hap. Also had dope showcases by Slapp Symphony and Maleko & Optimus Rhymes.
The dudes @ Easy Music recorded footage from the battle, and within a week posted them up on their YouTube. Those guys did their thing with the videos: multiple angles, taking the sound off the soundboard, etc. Dope stuff. Here’s the footage of beats from my homies Phil and Shaun’s beats, and mines as well.
The match-ups were: Portuguese Sausage Fest vs. EK, Stutterin’ Stan vs. Philippe Anthony, and The Hap vs. Shaun Castro. Portuguese Sausage Fest, Stutterin’ Stan and The Hap moved to the Semis.
Shaun Castro, Philippe Anthony and EK battled for the final spot in the Semis, with Shaun moving on.
The Semi-Finals matched up Portuguese Sausage Fest vs. Shaun Castro and Stutterin’ Stan vs. The Hap, with Portuguese Sausage Fest and the Hap going to the Finals.
In the finals, The Hap battled Portuguese Sausage Fest, with Portuguese Sausage Fest coming out the victor. So we got Lael and Portuguese Sausage Fest going to the Finals early next year, with four more qualifiers to go to find out who will join them.
They will be holding the third installment next month @ Easy Music on Thursday, September 25, 2008 from 5-7pm. Competitors include: The Hap, ILL Turner, DJ Cozy, Pakman, and Joe Gosalvez. They need one competitor right now, but I’m guessing by the time anyone reads this Kav will find that final guy. I can’t enter this one, due to Solid Foundations class at GBC, but I’ll definitely enter in the ones after this. So be on the look out!
Support Kav and the LightSleepers‘ efforts, he’s keeping these events going definitely for the love and for the youth. And support Easy Music. They’ll get you the equipment you need.
Here’s some vids of our beats. You can check the rest here.
There’s been so much that’s gone on and so little time to blog about it.
I just got baptized Saturday at Ala Moana Beach Park along with two guys from my small group, Patrick and Shawn. It was a great thing, to show my obedience to God that I am truly living for him and it will continue. Thanks to those who came out and shared the experience with me: Shaun Castro, Patrick, Sean, Ashley, Emma, Canaan, Kristen, Josh, Benjy, Jay, Rhyme, Tia, Cristalyne, Bryson, Janel, Jacie, Kavet, Micah, Paquito, Brandon, Aeza, Jameson, and the rest of the guys from Church. THANK YOU!
Right now, I’m hard at work on beats for the upcoming beat battle: Beat Root 8 . It will be on Thursday, July 10, 2008 at Easy Music Center, King Street from 5 to 7pm. It’s FREE! I got a few beats I have done, but I’m still unsure of which ones to use and ideas have been coming in and out of my brain. It will be fun though! So come out!
Also, I turn 23 soon. Yeah! (sarcastically). My birthday is Tuesday, July 1st. Another year wiser, and so on.
If you’re planning on getting me something, I compiled a birthday wishlist for you. Just for fun because honestly I pretty much got what I need and feel blessed. But it doesn’t hurt to have gifts. :]

It’s been mostly church, work, chillin’ with friends, and preparing for the beat battle for me lately. Also, I’ve become closer to a lot of people through this time: Shaun, Micah, Jen, Ashley, etc. Life is good, and I think it will always be, now that God is the center of it all. And I’m happy about that. Pce and blessings ’til next time.
